Greg Conlon, who ran for City Council last November, is the only Atherton resident so far who has applied for appointment to the council seat being vacated July 1 by Jerry Carlson.

Residents have until 5 p.m. Monday, July 8, to apply for the seat.

The City Council decided on June 19 to appoint Mr. Carlson’s replacement if three of the four remaining members can agree on a single candidate. Council members will interview applicants on Thursday, July 11, beginning at 5:30 p.m.; if they fail to appoint one to the seat that night, they will vote on whether to call for an election in November.

If the council appoints an applicant, that person would be sworn into office at the July 17 council meeting and would serve out Mr. Carlson’s term, which ends in December 2014.

Mr. Conlon has served on the town’s Audit and Finance committees, now combined as one committee, for the last two years. He now serves as chairman. He also has been a member of the Rail Committee for five years.

His resume includes six years on the California Public Utilities Commission, with two years as president, and more than two years on the state’s Transportation Commission.

Mr. Conlon, a regular attendee of council meetings, was one of four candidates for two seats on the council last year. He came in third place, behind now-Mayor Elizabeth Lewis and Cary Wiest.

Residents interested in applying for the council seat should contact City Clerk Theresa DellaSanta at 752-0529 or tdellasanta@ci.atherton.ca.us. Application forms are available online at the town’s website under the “Announcement” heading on the home page.

  1. Conlon’s stated positions during the last election, when he was not endorsed by the cops, that he was all for the cops and their compensation, to try to curry their favor, rule him out. He shouldn’t even try. He’s not going to get that seat.

  2. Preventing Atherton cops, who receive most of Atherton’s budget money, from controlling a third seat (they currently have paid for and own Lewis and Wiest) is a worthy goal. Conlon gets disqualified on this basis. Remember his remark that he “cherishes” the police department.

  3. I like it when citizens get involved, I think it is important.

Recently 4/23/13 Greg Conlon got involved at a Board of Supervisor meeting to express his thoughts about the Boundary Redistricting Committee its makeup and to check its legal standing.

He has attended several if not all of the Redistricting Committee meetings and has made comments. He is interested in the bigger picture meaning San Mateo County.

I wouldn’t worry to much about any pro police comments attributed to him, I know of only one candidate in the past who was able to stay away from the police support. Atherton residents have a very unique challenge on their hands and until the Police Department gets of of the politics business, I would guess that ALL candidates are going to say how much they cherish the APD….I say it almost everyday as I drive through town.
