The Atherton City Council will interview seven candidates for a vacant council seat at a 5:30 p.m. meeting today (July 11), and possibly appoint one of them to fill out a term ending December 2014.

The seven candidates are: Audit/Finance Committee chair and Rail Committee member Greg Conlon; longtime council watcher and Transportation Commissioner John Ruggeiro; Community Center Advisory Committee vice-chair Rick DeGolia; Audit/Finance Committee member Diane Sandhu; Transportation Committee and Rail Committee member Michael Lempres; Atherton newcomer Michael Stogner, a former San Mateo County supervisor candidate; and Jo-Ann Byrne Sockolov, a former San Mateo County Board of Education candidate.

The four council members hope they can agree on someone to serve out the term of Jerry Carslon, who resigned July 1 and is moving out of town. If they fail to do so tonight, they will vote on whether to call for an election in November.

The meeting will be in the City Council Chambers, 91 Ashfield Ave. in the Atherton Town Center.

  1. Council not able to pick one tonight, election is next option for a 1 year time period. They came close but unable to get three votes. Best of luck to all of Atherton
