Update: Crash leaves two seriously injured

Multiple lanes on University Avenue shut down during Wednesday morning commute

Lanes on University Avenue at Bayfront Expressway shut down for hours on Wednesday following a crash that seriously injured two drivers around 7:30 a.m.

Police said a preliminary investigation shows that a 2002 Toyota, driven by a 57-year-old Palo Alto woman heading east, jumped the median into oncoming traffic in the westbound lane of University Avenue. The car then hit a 2013 Mercedes, driven by a 60-year-old Union City woman, head-on.

The drivers were taken to Stanford Hospital for treatment, police said. The Palo Alto resident remains in critical condition; the other woman sustained serious injuries that are not thought to be life-threatening.

At this time, drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor, according to the report.

The Nov. 20 collision remains under investigation. Police ask that anyone information about the accident call 330-6300.

I don't know exactly what happened in this collision, but I do know that people drive way too fast and way too close on these streets. Combine that with wet conditions and collisions are going to happen. Best wishes to the injured people, but collisions due to speed and tailgating and not paying attention to traffic conditions are easily preventable.

Terrible visuals on this wreck -- the one car was up on the median strip. Police had set up a tent and were also taking pictures, potentially for evidence. Sad that when we get some rain around here people react like southerners in the snow.

It is just morons driving on the wet streets. A lot of people don't change their tires, thus loose control. Thanks. Longest drive to work ever.
