With junior Ben Burr-Kirven scoring on runs on 9, 44, 1 and 7 yards, Sacred Heart Prep (13-1) earned its first-ever berth in the CIF state finals with a dominating 42-7 victory over heavily favored El Cerrito in the CIF Division III NorCal Regional championship football game Saturday night at De Anza High in Richmond.
Andrew Segre added a one-yard scoring run and Mitch Martella caught a tipped pass from quarterback Mason Randall and took it in from 47 yards out for SHP late in the fourth quarter.
Burr-Kirven finished with 160 yards rushing on 15 carries with Segre adding 98 yards on 19 hauls.
The Gators, who are allowing only an average of 8.7 points a game this season in 14 games, next will play at noon on Dec. 21 in the state finals at the StubHub Center in Carson, on the campus of Cal State-Dominguez Hills.

It's "berth", not "birth". Who's your copy editor over there?

I'am 59 yrs old and i have a passion for highschool football. vI've seen Lynn Swann, Dan Fouts, OJ Simpson, and Tom Brady play in high school, and none of those guys played with more passion and determination then Ben Burr-Kirven. Like coach Lav said , " He is the best high school player I have ever seen". My sentiments exactly! Bring home that State Title.

Congrats to SHP, but I have to question the timing of the state finals. A few days before Christmas when many people are either planning to travel to be with family or have family traveling to see them, is this how families want to spend the weekend? (Many, many people had plans to travel on Saturday and Sunday and not to a football game).

Uh, many 'average Joe's' have a plan on Saturday and Sunday that does include the Great American Game of Football. Have you seen the Bowl and NFL schedule for the weekend? ;)
This is a once in a lifetime event for these families, congrats! Many of these families have been involved with football for years, maybe even almost a decade by now.
Congrats to Ben, Matt, Paul, Andrew and all the others! GO SHP!!
