Menlo Park: Hillview students briefly evacuated after fire breaks out

Hillview Middle School students were evacuated from their Menlo Park campus on Santa Cruz Avenue shortly after 10 a.m. this morning after a "shopvac" caught fire in the Industrial Arts Room, creating smoke and setting off the alarm. It was quickly put out by a supervising teacher, the Menlo Park City School District said in an email bulletin.

Firefighters arrived on campus within minutes, and "upon confirmation from the fire department that the school was safe, students were permitted to return to campus about 15 minutes after the initial alarm," according to the bulletin.

The Industrial Arts classroom and the adjoining art classroom were closed to students and staff for a few more minutes as the fire department cleared the room of any residual smoke. Thirty minutes following the small fire, all students were permitted to return to all classrooms and school resumed as normal, the bulletin said.
