Tonight: Atherton's first 'National Night Out' event

By Tiffany Lam | Special to the Almanac

"We want to send a message to criminals," says Theresa DellaSanta, Atherton's city clerk who is helping organize the town's first National Night Out event on Tuesday, Aug. 5, in Holbrook-Palmer Park. The message, she says is "our neighborhoods are organized and fighting against crime."

At the event, which runs from 6 to 8 p.m. at the lawn to the right of the Main House, residents will have the opportunity to learn about and become involved in both crime prevention and disaster preparedness.

This is the first year Atherton is participating in the National Night Out event, which is organized by the National Association of Town Watch and has been held in communities across the country since 1984. The goal is to enlist residents in crime-prevention efforts.

"It's a great opportunity for residents to talk with our police force (and) come together to create positive relationships," Ms. DellaSanta said.

Representatives of the Atherton Police Department, the California Highway Patrol, and Menlo Park Fire Protection District will be there, she said. There will also be activities for children, along with food and refreshments.

The event is free, but attendees are encouraged to RSVP by calling 752-0500.
