A 28-year-old woman was arrested for burglary by Atherton police on Sunday, Sept. 7, after she allegedly entered a home on Wilburn Avenue through an open sliding glass door.

Residents of the home found a woman in their kitchen in the late afternoon, police said. They spoke to her and she walked out of the house without a confrontation, police said.

The woman was found by police just moments after the residents called 911, in the side yard of another nearby residence. Brittany Bernstein, a resident of San Carlos, was arrested, police said.

The residents said nothing was taken from their home, police said.

“This arrest should serve as a reminder to all residents to make sure your doors and windows are closed and locked, and your alarm system is used as needed and working properly,” police said in a written statement.

  1. Just imagine! This young woman just walks into a private home where she has absolutely no business at all whatsoever. What a harrowing ordeal, finding some burglar in your own home. I’d have been a wit’s end. I’m so pleased that our wonderful police force captured this woman and arrested her. I realize Wilburn is just off of the El Camino Real. I wonder if this burglar just wandered into the neighborhood from there? How awful.

  2. According to Google this girl raised in San Carlos has a fairly long drug history and other charges. Since she has the apparent drug issue, breaking into homes is a logical step to support the habit. Remember – the law does not care if you break into a house where they may have minimal things of value to a Atherton mansion.
June, I am not sure if she wandered off ECR – she likely knows Atherton from growing up nearby. The fact it was near the 76 Redwood Way house is coincidental at a minimum.

  3. Since my post was removed for speculating on motive, I will simply share facts and June (presumably others) who have questions can infer.
Ms. Berstein grew up in San Carlos. She still uses that address on several of her recent arrest.
Ms. Berstein has been arrested several times for illegal narcotic violations and other criminal charges
Ms. Bernstein was also arrested by APD for a felony while out on bail or OR. I would have thought the Almanac / Ms. Wood should have included that in the story.
This burglary occurred a few streets away in the same neighborhood as the “drug house” as defined by Atherton at 75 Redwood Way (see Almanac stories on this)
