Police arrested a San Carlos man on suspicion of a fatal stabbing in downtown Redwood City on Tuesday night. Officers responded to a report of a stabbing at Courthouse Square on Broadway at about 8:25 p.m. Tuesday, police said.

Officers found a 32-year-old Redwood City man with at least one stab wound and transported him to Stanford Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased, according to police.

Police said they were able to identify the suspect as 24-year-old Jake Monahan of San Carlos and found him in the 600 block of Warren Street, where he was taken into custody without incident.

Police said the two men are acquaintances and were involved in a physical altercation before the stabbing occurred.

Monahan was booked into San Mateo County Jail on suspicion of homicide.

Anyone with information about the case or the suspect is asked to call Detective Josh Chilton at (650) 780-7141.
