Student art contest: imagining the future of transit

SamTrans and the San Mateo County Office of Education announced they have teamed up for the annual "Art Takes a Bus Ride" student art contest.

This year's theme is "The Future of SamTrans," and students are encouraged to imagine next-generation transit technologies such as flying buses, high-tech gizmos and space-age designs, SamTrans officials said.

Winning entries will be put on display as a wrap on a SamTrans bus for about one year. Student artwork associated with the contest will also be featured on advertising cards inside all SamTrans buses.

The contest is for students in first through sixth grade. The deadline for entries is Feb. 27 and the winners will be revealed at the SamTrans board of directors meeting on May 6.

Teachers in San Mateo County can contact Buena Dandan at the Office of Education at (650) 802-5339 or bdandan@smcoe.k12.ca.us for more information on how to submit student entries. Entry forms can also be downloaded by clicking here.

Roughly 10,000 youths ride SamTrans buses on a typical weekday, accounting for more than 21 percent of the district's total ridership, according to SamTrans officials.
