Saturday: Portola Valley town picnic to include soccer aimed at kids under 12

There will be "small-sided" soccer this year along with the usual Zots-to-Tots race, kids' carnival and barbecue at the annual Portola Valley picnic on Saturday, June 6. Meant for kids under 12, small-sided soccer is played on fields of reduced size with smaller teams, sometimes three players per side and no goal keepers.

The Zots-to-Tots race begins the picnic, as usual, with a foot, scooter and bike race of about two miles -- from Rossotti's/Alpine Inn at 3195 Alpine Road to the Town Center at 765 Portola Road. Race registration opens at 9:30 a.m. and the race begins at 10:30 a.m.

The picnic at Town Center, which also begins at 10:30 a.m., will include a carnival by the Cub Scouts, barbecue by the Boy Scouts, and a cake walk and concessions by the Girl Scouts, the town says. There will be a strolling magician, an obstacle course, and an inflated room for jumping fun.

For the adults, volunteers from among the town's 16 Town Council advisory committees will be on hand to talk about their work.

Music is planned for 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and there will be a bar offering beer and wine.
