For those looking for a healthful alternative to funnel cakes and corndogs, the Healthy Fare program at the San Mateo County Fair is offering 26 food options at the fair's 12 concession stands.
Pizza salad, veggie burritos and a healthier version of the fair's famed cinnamon rolls await visitors at the fair, which runs through Sunday, June 14.
Each healthy menu item is listed on the fair's website, along with nutrition information. Last year, about 5 percent of all entrees sold were healthful, fair officials said.
"The fair draws 125,000 each year, so even 5 percent of people making a healthier choice impacts the health of our whole community," says Eliana Bushwalter, head of the San Mateo County Health System's nutrition team.
There will be chef demonstrations featuring five of San Mateo County's locally grown vegetables: fava beans, artichokes, leeks, peas and Brussel sprouts.
