Pony Club championships come to Woodside

By Cristian Ponce | Special to the Almanac

About 150 junior riders, ages 10 and up, from the western United States are expected to compete in the 2015 U.S. Pony Clubs Championships West events, to be held at the Horse Park at Woodside from July 31 to Aug. 9.

Mixed teams compete in the events, which include mounted games, show jumping, dressage, eventing, tetrathlon and horse knowledge quizzes.

Teams are judged, not only by on-field performances, but by horse management off the field, as well.

The Woodside Pony Club has 14 members, nearly half of its club members, competing in four disciplines. Emma Erickson, Lisa Sachs and Alexis Crouch will be competing in the Quiz Champs. Hannah Bailey, Caroline McCoy, Isabella Gaddini and Brittany Flores will take part in the Show Jumping Champs. Katie Raynor will ride in the Dressage Champs. Katie Meade, Brianna Maroney, Michaela Maroney, Jessica Flores, and Natalie and Katherine Lane (Horsemasters) will compete in Tetrathlon.

Opening ceremony is Sunday, Aug. 2, from 6 to 6:30 pm at The Horse Park at Woodside, 3674 Sand Hill Road. The entire competition is free and open to the public.
