Service Sunday for longtime Woodside resident

Matthew Shanks dies July 20 at age 65

A memorial service will be held for longtime Woodside resident Matthew Joseph Shanks at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2, at Christ Church, 815 Portola Road in Portola Valley.

Mr. Shanks died from a heart attack on July 20 while vacationing in Greece with his wife and friends, according to his family. He was 65.

Mr. Shanks was a real estate agent, grew up in Redwood City and graduated from the University of California at Santa Barbara. His interests included gardening, hiking, yoga and walking the family dog around Woodside, his family said.

"Matthew was a beloved husband and an incredible father," his daughter said.

Mr. Shanks is survived by his wife, Penny Lydecker Shanks; daughter Natalie Shanks; son Kyle Shanks; and eight siblings.

Contributions in Mr. Shanks' memory may be made to the Peninsula Open Space Trust, National Public Radio or the American Heart Association.
