Caltrans offers $25K prize for ideas to improve transportation

Caltrans is giving Californians an opportunity to earn $25,000 in exchange for submitting the most innovative idea to improve transportation and other state services.

Caltrans on Monday launched the new contest "$25K Find a New Way" and is accepting submissions through 5 p.m. on Oct. 13, according to Caltrans officials.

According to the contest website, contest entries must not exceed three single-sided typed pages or be more than 500 words. Contestants are permitted to include a one-minute video and/or five images with their entry.

The winner of the $25,000 will be announced on Dec. 31.

More contest information is available at findanewway.ca.gov or the hashtag #25KfindANewWay on Twitter.

But -- isn't it Caltrans' job to come up with good, practical ideas about how to best get us all to where we are going, and back, safely and efficiently and at a reasonable cost to us? Aren't they supposed to be the real experts on this -- having all the facts at hand, and having years of training in transportation planning? And isn't it our legislators' job to support really good transportation and properly fund it long-term?

This silly contest is not needed. (And the prize is so small it is ludicrous.)
