Gravel will fill the gap behind this new retaining wall along Alpine Road across from the intersection with Arastradero Road in Portola Valley. The wall's placement creates more space for bicyclists, and the gravel will channel rainwater coming down the hillside to drains at either end of the wall, according to Howard Young, public works director for the town of Portola Valley.
