Saturday: America Recycles Day

Free compost, facility tours, e-waste recycling, a poster exhibition and arts and crafts await visitors to the region's first annual "America Recycles Day."

The event will take place at the Shoreway Environmental Center, 333 Shoreway Road in San Carlos, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14. It is co-sponsored by RethinkWaste, Recology San Mateo County and South Bay Recycling.

The event will feature the winning posters of RethinkWaste's second annual America Recycles Day poster contest, created by local third- to sixth-graders.

Menlo Park and Atherton are two of 12 member cities of RethinkWaste, also known as the South Bayside Waste Management Authority, a joint powers authority that works to reduce waste and encourages recycling through public education and various programs. In 2014 it won a Gold Award for Excellence in Public Education from the Solid Waste Association of Northern America.

RethinkWaste also manages the Shoreway Environmental Center, which receives all the recyclables, organic materials and solid waste collected in the area it serves, according to its website.
