Saturday celebration of life for R. Hollis Elliott, retired Menlo Park attorney

A celebration of the life of R. Hollis Elliott will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, at Harry's Hofbrau, 1909 El Camino Real, in Redwood City. Mr. Elliott, a longtime Menlo Park resident, died Nov. 1 of a massive heart attack at his home in Santa Rosa.

Mr. Elliott was born in Bozeman, Montana, and graduated from Gallatin County High School.

R. Hollis Elliott
He spent a short time at the University of Montana before enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corp. From 1954 to 1956, he spent much of his active duty aboard the USS Wasp.

In 1958 he moved his family to Menlo Park and attended Stanford University. He went on to graduate from Stanford Law School in 1962.

After graduating from law school, he worked for the state of California.

In 1966 he went to Jackson, Mississippi, to volunteer with the Lawyers Constitutional Defense Committee of the ACLU. He represented African-Americans who had been charged with crimes and found it difficult to obtain representation in the segregated South.

He returned to Menlo Park and in 1968 joined the law firm of Jorgenson, Cosgrove, Flickinger, et al. In 1971 he began his work as a "small town lawyer" with partners Tom Nolan, Chan Flickinger and Brenda Cash, say family members. For the next 43 years the office at 841 Menlo Ave. was his second home, they say.

For years, he was a board member of the Menlo Park Chamber of Commerce.

He retired in 2014 and moved, with his wife Debbie Devoto, to Oakmont in the Sonoma wine country. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Debbie; children Sherri-Ann Elliott and Roscoe Elliott; and brothers Pat and Corbin.
