New mayors in Woodside and Portola Valley; high school board reorganized

The town councils of Woodside and Portola Valley chose new mayors for 2016 this week.

Woodside's new mayor is Deborah Gordon, and Portola Valley's mayor is Maryann Moise Derwin. Both were elected on unanimous votes, in Woodside on Dec. 8 and in Portola Valley on Dec. 9.

The mayor pro-tem in Woodside is Tom Livermore. The vice mayor in Portola Valley is Craig Hughes. Both were also elected on unanimous votes.

The board of the Sequoia Union High School District reorganized on Wednesday, Dec. 9. Alan Sarver was elected board president, Carrie DuBois was elected vice-president and Chris Thomsen was elected clerk.

For all three positions on the five-member high school district board, the vote was 4-0-1, with Ms. DuBois abstaining in a protest over the process used to conduct the elections. The setting of board governance procedures is a high priority topic for a half-day board retreat scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 23, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., tentatively at the Redwood City Woman's Club.
