Menlo Park: Police chase, arrest suspect in Trader Joe's robbery

After a "lengthy foot pursuit," police captured and arrested a 56-year-old man Monday afternoon on suspicion of stealing alcohol and threatening to shoot a security guard at Trader Joe's store in Menlo Park, police reported.

Melvin Williams of East Palo Alto was booked into San Mateo County jail on suspicion of robbery, criminal threat and resisting arrest, police said. No weapon was found.

Police were called at 3:46 p.m. with reports that a man had stolen alcohol and threatened a security officer before fleeing the store on Menlo Avenue in Menlo Park.

Police said Mr. Williams is also suspected in the robbery of a Home Depot store in East Palo Alto.

Well done MPPD. Thanks for taking this person off the street and the extra effort with the foot pursuit.

I'm glad the thief was caught. It's good to know that TJ's has security. My first thought was that it was sad someone felt the need to steal food, but when I read he stole alcohol, I had no sympathy. Perhaps Xmas in jail would be good for him.

Job well done, MPPD. It's not nice to be a thief. Have fun in jail.

Stella -

I'd have no sympathy for someone who stole food either.

And remember, this criminal threatened to shoot a security guard. I reserve my sympathy for people who don't steal and threaten. It's a low bar.
