Heavy rainfall hits Bay Area

The Bay Area is facing another wave of heavy rainfall on Tuesday morning that could bring rock slides and other problems to the region, according to the National Weather Service.

Several locations of the Bay Area will see strong winds with possible gusts of up to 30 mph and intense rain on Tuesday morning, weather forecasters said.

On the Midpeninsula, expect gusts of up to 23 mph and as high as 32 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

A subsequent storm may arrive in the region as soon as Wednesday night, said Matt Mehle, a meteorologist for the weather service.

"We're not out of the woods yet," Mehle said. "We're not going to see an extended period of dry weather for quite a while."

On Tuesday, up to an inch of rain is expected to fall in San Francisco and Monterey Bay, the weather service reported.

Most of the rain will occur in the coastal mountain ranges, with a 1.5-inch downpour expected in Santa Cruz and 1.43 inches expected in Big Sur.

There are also 1.3 inches of rain anticipated in the North Bay city of Cloverdale.

This could lead to slick roadways and a longer commute for Bay Area residents, particularly on Tuesday morning, according to the weather service.

The rain could possibly bring slight rises in small creeks and streams as well as flooding in areas prone to it, Mehle said.

Rock slides are also likely, he added.

"The ground has been saturated (by recent rain) and primed for it," Mehle said. "In each of the storms we've had lately, we've gotten a report of a rock slide."

After heavy rainfall on Sunday, rock slides closed state Highway 84 in both directions in the Niles Canyon area of Fremont for more than three hours this morning.

Mehle said this impending storm is moving faster than the one that hit the Bay Area on Sunday, which dropped about 1.3 inches of rain on San Francisco and up to 3 inches in other areas in the region.
