Those were the days

This private theater at a 50-acre estate on Kings Mountain Road was popular with the locals during the Prohibition era.

It was connected to a carriage house via an underground tunnel that was used by guests arriving at large parties where liquor was illegally served, according to the Woodside history book by Thalia Lubin and Bob Dougherty of the Woodside History Committee.

Once owned by socialite George Whittell Jr. and his wife, Elia Pascal, the estate was bought by Apple executive Mike Markkula, who restored the theater, according to the book.
