3-D light shows return to Redwood City

'Magic Lantern' displays will have a seasonal theme

Magic Lantern 3-D light shows, which last year transformed Redwood City's Courthouse Square into a dazzling display of animation, colors, and music, will return on Tuesday evenings starting Feb. 9.

Images are projected directly onto the San Mateo County History Museum facade in a custom installation. The new show, which will run through April 26, again designed by light artist Bart Kresa, will feature seasonal images, including nods to Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, Easter, Cinco de Mayo and Giants Opening Day. Kresa has created previous projects for Disney, The Grammy Awards, Paramount Pictures, FIFA Women's World Cup, and HBO, among others.

The free, 15-minute light shows will occur at 7 and 8 p.m. for the first few weeks, starting later as daylight increases.

"There are only a handful of artists in the world that can do what Bart does and we get to showcase one of his 3-D video mapping displays right in the heart of our Downtown for the whole Bay Area to enjoy," Redwood City Improvement Association (RCIA) President Eric Lochtefeld said in a press release.

RCIA, a nonprofit group that works to bring arts, culture and special events to downtown Redwood City, plans to present new light shows each quarter.

Previous shows included one with an autumnal theme, featuring Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Dias de los Muertos motifs.
