Atherton seeking tree award nominations

April 12 is deadline

Do you have a favorite tree in Atherton?

If so, the town wants to know about it. Nominations for the town's annual tree awards are being accepted through April 12. Prizes are awarded in several categories: outstanding specimens; trees that are unique in size, age, species, or historical significance; best-preserved tree; and best newly planted tree.

Winners will be picked by the Atherton Tree Committee, which works to further appreciation and protection of the town's urban forest. Winners will be announced at the April 20 City Council meeting.

As could be expected for a town designated a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation, Atherton will also celebrate Arbor Day in Holbrook-Palmer Park at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 9, with a talk on tree maintenance by John McClenahan, a tree planting, and a raffle with tree-related prizes.

Athertontree.org has nomination forms, which are also available in the town administrative offices at 91 Ashfield Road.
