Man arrested on rape charges over reported incident at Dumbarton Bridge

Latest story: Woman recants allegation of rape.

Menlo Park police, with the participation of police from San Francisco and San Mateo, arrested and booked into San Mateo County jail Antoine Sprueel, 46, of Hayward on suspicion of rape in an incident that reportedly took place at the Dumbarton Bridge in Menlo Park on Friday, April 8.

The charges against Mr. Sprueel are rape by force, oral copulation by force, and battery, police said.

In response to a call from a woman, San Francisco police located and detained Mr. Sprueel, then determined that the reported incident had occurred outside their jurisdiction, police said.

In a subsequent interview, San Mateo police determined that the reported incident had occurred at the Dumbarton Bridge, which then engaged Menlo Park police in the case, police said.

The woman told police that she was traveling in a vehicle with Mr. Sprueel because he was "giving her a ride," police said.
