Menlo Park office manager pleads no contest to embezzlement, identity theft

A former office manager accused of embezzling over $1 million from Creekside Landscaping Inc. in Menlo Park entered into a plea agreement with a San Mateo County judge on April 15 that included a sentence of no more than seven years and eight months in state prison.

In exchange, the office manager, Shannon Marie Cardenas of San Mateo, pleaded no contest to one count of felony embezzlement and one count of felony identity theft, according to prosecutors.

Ms. Cardenas, 39, remains in county jail on a bail of $500,000.

The embezzlement activities included writing fraudulent company checks to herself for overtime and bonuses and using company credit cards to pay for trips, vehicles and other expenses, prosecutors said.

The crimes were discovered after she had abruptly resigned from the company, prosecutors said.

Ms. Cardenas' next court appearance is set for 8:45 a.m. on May 27 for sentencing.
