Saturday, Sunday: Portola Valley celebrates the horse

By Kate Daly | ==Special to the Almanac==

Portola Valley's third annual Celebration of the Horse will be spread out over two days on Memorial Day weekend with a group ride Saturday morning, May 28, followed by a Horse Fair on Sunday afternoon, May 29.

Both events are sponsored by the Portola Valley Trails & Paths Committee and will take place at Portola Valley Town Center, 765 Portola Road.

The trail ride is set to start at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 28, and last until about noon. Organizer Barb Eckstein says about 30 locals and riders from neighboring towns and horse clubs usually show up for coffee, juice and donuts, and then head out for three rides of varying length and difficulty.

On May 29 from 2 to 5 p.m. the Horse Fair will feature miniature horses and Icelandic ponies, carriage rides, a petting zoo put on by Jasper Ridge Farm, a chance to play vet and listen to a horse's heart beat, roping practice, and face painting.

In observance of Memorial Day, lapel poppies from the VFW hall in Redwood City will be handed out. The flowers are a visual reminder of the World War I poem, "Flanders Fields."
