Want to run for school board? Info meeting June 1

Two open seats on board of Menlo Park City School District

Those interested in running in the Nov. 8 election for one of the two open seats on the school board of the Menlo Park City School District are invited to a candidate information night at 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 1, at the district office in the TERC building, 181 Encinal Ave. in Atherton.

The board oversees Oak Knoll, Laurel and Encinal elementary schools and Hillview Middle School. The new Upper Campus of Laurel Elementary is expected to open in October.

Current board members are Jeff Child (president), Stacey Jones (vice president/clerk), Maria Hilton, Joan Lambert and Terry Thygesen. The terms of Mr. Child and Ms. Hilton end this year.

At the June 1 meeting, Ms. Jones and Ms. Lambert will talk about expectations for serving on the board, what's going on in the district, and general information about the election process.

The candidate filing period is from July 18 to Aug. 12.

Two candidate seminars are scheduled at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 13, and 10 a.m. Thursday, July 21, at San Mateo County Elections Office at 40 Tower Road in San Mateo.

Call the school district office at (650) 321-7140 or visit the district's website for more information.

Do you know if the candidate seminars in July at the San Mateo County Elections Office are for all candidates running for school board? There are two vacancies on the Las Lomitas Governing Board as well, but there is has not been a public meeting to discuss these openings.

Yes, the July seminars will be for all potential candidates. In the meantime, here's a link to some information about becoming a candidate from the county's website: Web Link .

The county hasn't yet posted much information about the November ballot, perhaps because we need to get past tomorrow's election first.

Please see this related story Web Link about the Menlo Park district's candidates' information meeting, much of which applies to all local school boards.
