Spare the Air alert issued for Tuesday

High temperatures and low winds could create unhealthy conditions, air district officials say

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District has issued a Spare the Air alert for Tuesday because of expected unhealthy air conditions in the region.

The alert is a result of forecasted temperatures nearing 100 degrees in some parts of the Bay Area combining with light winds and vehicle exhaust to create unhealthy amounts of ozone, air district officials said. The alert is the fifth issued this month.

"The purpose of a Spare the Air alert is two-fold. First, we are alerting Bay Area residents that air quality is expected to be unhealthy and to take precautions to protect their health," air district executive officer Jack Broadbent said in a statement.

"Second, we ask them to reduce pollution by taking transit, carpooling, walking or biking, instead of driving alone," Broadbent said.

Bay Area residents can visit www.stacommutetips.org to find a list of commute programs and incentives available to them.

Please tell your gardeners that under chapter 8.07 of Menlo Park municipal code, gas-powered leaf blowers may not be operated in Menlo Park on Spare the Air days. Period.

Even on non-Spare the Air days, only "certified" leaf blowers (based on noise output lower than 65 dB) may be used in Menlo Park, but we should at least keep these infernal devices from being used on days when our air quality is truly awful! Thanks.
