Wednesday: Kepler's program focuses on Brock Turner case

In Deep Radio, a weekly news program hosted by Bay Area journalist Angie Coiro, will tackle in a live show Wednesday (June 29) the international debate over the sentencing of Brock Turner, the former Stanford University student-athlete found guilty of sexually assaulting an unconscious and intoxicated woman on campus last January.

Coiro will host the show at Kepler's Books in Menlo Park. Sajid Khan, a Santa Clara County public defender since 2008, will join her, as well as Imani Gandy, senior legal analyst for Rewire News.

They will discuss the verdict, sentencing and recall, among other aspects of the case.

"Why has the verdict of one rape trial caused a multi-country storm of fury? The debate over Brock Turner's sentence incorporates sexism, racism, classism, and a clash over how much leeway a judge has in the sentencing process," a description of the show reads. "In Deep probes the call for Judge Aaron Persky to step down or be removed, the unexpected reach and impact of the victim's statement, and the appropriate relationship between societal standards and the legal system."

The two-hour show will begin at noon at Kepler's, 1010 El Camino Real, Menlo Park. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. Tickets are free; RSVP here.

The show will also be recorded and posted online on Stitcher as well iTunes.
