Menlo Park: Local students complete Facebook internships

Eighteen high school students from low-income or underprivileged backgrounds completed a six-week internship at Facebook on Aug. 3.

Students who participated in the internship program, called "Facebook Academy," worked full-time in various departments at Facebook.

During the internship, students were paired with professionals at the company's media partnerships, finance operations, communications, public policy and information technology departments, according to a Facebook spokesperson.

This was the first year that participating students also received weekly instruction in coding.

The program is for rising high school juniors who have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5. No prior work experience is necessary, according to the program website.

According to the same spokesperson, since 2012, the program has enrolled nearly 100 students who live in East Palo Alto, Belle Haven or Redwood City or attend Mission High School or John O’Connell High School in San Francisco.

Go to the Facebook Summer Academy website for more information.
