Menlo Park City School District discusses financial woes tonight

One in series of meetings on district's projected budget deficit

The governing board of the Menlo Park City School District will hold one of a planned series of discussions on how the district will deal with its budget problems when it meets tonight, Sept. 20, starting at 7 p.m. in the TERC building, 181 Encinal Ave., Atherton.

A final decision on how the district will address the problems is scheduled for Nov. 30.

The Sept. 20 meeting's agenda says district staff will make a presentation on possible reductions in various expenditures, including staff reductions, increased class sizes, changes to educational programs, compensation adjustments and department reorganizations.

The district will also consider additional revenue sources from parcel taxes, grants or donations.

In addition to the Sept. 20 session, meetings are scheduled for:

● Sept. 27, 6 p.m., Hillview Performing Arts Center, 1100 Elder Ave., Menlo Park. A community input session and review of the May 3 parcel tax election.

● Oct. 18, 6 p.m., TERC building, 181 Encinal Ave., Atherton. The regular board meeting will include a discussion and a report on recommendations to address the deficit.

● Oct. 24, 9 a.m., Hillview Performing Arts Center, 1100 Elder Ave., Menlo Park. A community input session to discuss alternative options to reductions.

● Oct. 25, 6 p.m., Hillview Performing Arts Center, 1100 Elder Ave., Menlo Park. A community input session to discuss alternative options to reductions.

● Nov. 9, 6 p.m., Hillview Performing Arts Center, 1100 Elder Ave., Menlo Park. At this regular board meeting, the board will continue to discuss recommendations for reductions and alternative options, review community input and give direction to staff.

● Nov. 30, 6 p.m., Hillview Performing Arts Center, 1100 Elder Ave., Menlo Park. Final plan for addressing the projected deficit to be approved by the board.
