SHP's Johnston named CCS girls' water polo Player of the Year

Sacred Heart Prep senior Maddy Johnston was named Central Coast Section girls' water polo Player of the Year.

The Michigan-bound Johnston tops the list of 10 players that also includes Gators' senior Maddie Pendolino and Gunn junior Zoe Banks.

Johnston and Pendolino helped guide Sacred Heart Prep to its 10th straight CCS Division II title, beating Soquel in the finals.

The Gators won the West Catholic Athletic League regular season title but then lost to St. Francis in the WCAL tournament. The Lancers went on to win the CCS Division I with an overtime victory over Leland.

Gunn lost to Mountain View, 5-4, in the quarterfinals of the CCS Division I tournament.

Sullivan Wu was named MVP of the PAL Bay Division, with Castilleja's Georgia Lewis named Most Valuable Goalie.

Castilleja's Serena Rivera-Korver and Jenna Kotcher were named to the first team along with Menlo-Atherton's Annabelle Paris, Woodside's Maya Srinivasan and Mina Sealund, Mercy-Burlingame's Marena Kibblewhite and Carlmont's Megan Olazar.
