Menlo-Atherton hosts 3-AA NorCal football playoff game

 

Menlo-Atherton will continue its football journey with a Northern California contest at home against Manteca Friday at 7:30 p.m.

The Bears (11-2) earned a spot in the state playoffs after beating Milpitas, 17-0, in the Central Coast Section Open Division I playoffs.

The Buffaloes (12-1) won the Sac-Joaquin Division IV championship with a 50-28 victory over Placer. Manteca won its three playoffs games by a combined 144-42 margin.

Menlo-Atherton received permission from its neighbors to host the historic contest, which is slotted into the Division 3-AA level.

The winner of Friday's game will play for a state title the following weekend in Southern California against either Paraclete of Lancaster (10-4) or Mater Dei Catholic of Chula Vista (12-1). Those teams play Friday night at 7:30 p.m. at Antelope Valley College.

Manteca is currently ranked 12th in its section and 85th in the state by MaxPreps.com. M-A is ranked fourth in the section and 61st in the state.

Wrestling

A young Titan wrestling team sent two teams to the Ed Ferrell Invitational on Saturday at Harbor High School in Santa Cruz.

Led by champion sophomore Dash Lee (195), 12 boys and eight girls competed in separate tournaments and came away with 14 medalists: eight boys and six girls.

"This is always a great way to start the season...to see what we need to work on and what is already working," said Gunn coach Chris Horpel. "Our varsity lineup will benefit as we do our final preparation for the Gunn Quad next Saturday."

M-A's Fola Akinola and Livienna Lie each won titles at Saturday's Bear Bash while Abby Ericson was a runner-up.

Girls basketball

Eastside Prep's Kayla Tahaafe proved unstoppable Saturday as the Panthers beat Moreau Catholic, 91-63, in the third-place game of the Ladycat Classic at Marin Catholic.

Tahaafe was 15-of-18 (83 percent) from floor and scored 37 points to go with 10 rebounds and eight assists for the Panthers (3-1), who host South San Francisco on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Ra'Anaa Bey added 19 points on 70 percent shooting, which included 5-of-7 from 3-point range. Alayah Bell 12 points.

Menlo-Atherton finished the Cardinal Newman Classic with a win over St. Mary's-Albany in the consolation game, 76-56, on Saturday.

M-A junior Greer Hoyem scored a team high 24 points and was named to the all-tournament team. Carly McLanahan added 14 points for the Bears (2-1), who host Eastside at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Pinewood beat host La Jolla Country Day, 61-52, to place third in the 'Sweet 16' tournament. Klara Astrom scored 16 points to lead the Panthers (3-1), including an 8-of-8 effort from the foul line. Hannah Jump added 12 and Akayla Hackson had 10.
