A green-painted bike lane is coming to a section of southbound Alameda de las Pulgas that has been vexing for some cyclists: the fifth of a mile between Fernside Street and Woodside Road alongside the eastern border of the Menlo Country Club.

The alteration to the intersection of Fernside and Alameda, an idea backed by Woodside’s Circulation Committee, will close an existing merge lane from Fernside onto Alameda, forcing vehicles headed toward Woodside High School to make a right turn onto the Alameda from a full stop.

Bikes travel south on the Alameda now, but the formal bike lane ends at Fernside, leaving bikes to fend for themselves among the cars and trucks with only a white painted fog line for a fifth of a mile.

The Woodside Town Council meets at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday (April 25) in Independence Hall at 2955 Woodside Road. The bike-lane item is the third item of new business.

The resolution would approve project plans and specifications authorizing the town manager to advertise for bids to build a bike lane and an accompanying turn pocket for vehicles headed west on Woodside Road.

The project has the support of the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, the city of Redwood City, and Woodside High School, according to a staff report.

Funding includes $275,000 from the county and $70,000 in matching funds from the town of Woodside, a staff report says.

Also on the agenda:

• The annual audit of the town’s books,

• A resolution declaring October 14 as the 2017 Day of the Horse celebration and requesting permission from the state Department of Transportation to use Highway 84 for equestrian-related activities

• A discussion and possible introduction of an ordinance that would allow exceptions to the Americans with Disabilities Act to “lift burdensome requirements” for property owners on minor projects, including allowing accessibility ramps within property line setbacks.
