Incoming Stanford freshman Tyler Abramson scored twice, Menlo School grad Nick Bisconti added a goal and the USA men's junior national water polo team beat Iran, 15-3, to finish group play 3-1 at the FINA Junior World Championships in Belgrade, Serbia on Wednesday.
Hannes Daube scored five goals, including the first in each quarter, and Alex Wolf recorded 11 saves as the Americans advance into Thursday's quarterfinal round to take on China.
Team USA took the lead early in this one and never let it go as Daube put the squad ahead 1-0 with 4:18 to play in the first quarter. Johnny Hooper followed with a goal and then Jacob Cavano added two straight for a 4-0 advantage with time winding down in the first quarter. Iran added a late goal in the period but the United States took a 4-1 lead into the second quarter.
The two teams traded goals to begin the second period starting with another score from Daube. Ahead 5-2 it was Abramson, Bisconti and Daube scoring three in a row to grab an 8-2 advantage approaching halftime. Again Iran would score late in the period but Team USA held an 8-3 lead at the intermission.
In the second half the United States took complete control holding Iran scoreless while piling up seven more goals. In the third quarter Daube again started with a score while Jake Ehrhardt added two goals as a part of a five goal output in the period and Team USA went ahead 13-3 going to the fourth. Daube opened the final eight minutes with a goal, Ash Molthen tacked on a score late.
Team USA went 6-of-9 on power plays and converted a penalty shot while Iran was 1-of-8 on power plays and did not attempt a penalty.
Abramson has 10 goals through four games and Hooper has 12.
