With outdoor activities restricted due to the poor air quality as a result of the fires in northern California, Menlo School hosted the only game in town on Wednesday, beating visiting Notre Dame-Belmont, 25-18, 25-13, 25-19, in a West Bay Athletic League Foothill Division girls volleyball match.
All outdoor practices and scheduled games were cancelled or postponed, a reminder that nature has the last say.
Outdoor games remain in jeopardy at least through the weekend, depending on weather patterns and wind direction.
The Knights (20-3, 8-0) opened a two-game lead in the loss column over the second-place Tigers in the WBAL standings on Senior Night.
Sacred Heart Prep (21-5, 6-2) can move into a tie with Notre Dame with a win over Mercy-San Francisco on Thursday, setting up a duel with Menlo next Tuesday.
Menlo celebrated its six seniors on the occasion of their final regular-season home match. In all likelihood the Knights will host postseason contests.
The Knights heads to the Southern California Invitational in San Diego, meeting Pacific Ridge-Carlsbad at 3 pm in pool play. Menlo is entered in the Division I bracket.
Meanwhile, junior outside hitter Sianna Houghton had a team-high nine kills and three aces and added 11 digs.
Senior co-captain Kristin Sellers had 19 assists and seven kills. Junior Grace King contributed eight kills and junior Selina Xu posted 12 assists.
Senior libero Grace Enright recorded a team-high 15 digs and middle blocker Ryan Hodge added three blocks.
