Prep report: Tournament hoops titles for Menlo, Pinewood

Ally Stuart nailed four 3-pointers to help the Menlo School girls basketball team squeeze past St. Ignatius, 67-65, in the championship game of the Marin Catholic tournament Saturday.

Mallory North scored 20 points to lead the Knights (3-0), who host North Salinas at 7 p.m. Tuesday. North made five 3-pointers on the night.

Mohini Gupta and Avery Lee each added 10 points as Menlo matched its best start since opening the 2000-01 season with 11 straight wins.

The Knights were down by four entering the fourth quarter before rallying for the win.

Pinewood, ranked third in the state by CalHiSports, also won its tournament, beating host La Jolla Country Day, 51-39, in the championship of the LJCD Sweet 16 Invitational on Saturday. The Torreys are ranked ninth.

Hannah Jump led Pinewood with 16 points and seven rebounds. Klara Astrom added 14 points, five rebounds a couple of assists and three steals.

The Panthers (4-0) host fourth-ranked Salesian (1-0) at 7 p.m. Thursday, the start of a three-game homestand that also features Bishop O'Dowd and Valley Christian.

Menlo-Atherton beat St. Mary's-Berkeley, 68-45, at the Cardinal Newman Classic on Saturday. Carly McLanahan set a tournament record with eight 3-pointers. She nearly made a ninth before coming out of the game.

Greer Hoyem added 25 points for the Bears (1-2), who meet Clovis West (4-0) in the Elite Showcase at Laney College in Oakland on Friday at 7 p.m.

Freshman Catherine Chai, junior Oren Estes and sophomore Linnea Lindblom combined for another 19 points.

Also at the Cardinal Newman Classic, Priory (1-2) dropped a 69-33 decision to Division I powerhouse Heritage. Priory hosts South San Francisco (2-0) in a nonleague game at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Two-time defending state Division V champion Eastside College Prep (1-2) lost to host Cardinal Newman, 61-39. ECP plays Bradshaw Christian (0-2) of Sacramento at the Elite Showcase at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

Katie Fearon scored 24 points to lead Castilleja past visiting Nueva, 47-21. The Gators (2-2) led 30-10 at halftime.

Castilleja hosts Mills in a nonleague game at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Homestead's Izzy Sathy had 11 points and 10 rebounds in the Mustangs 55-50 win over host Gunn in a nonleague game Saturday. The Titans (0-2) play at Carlmont on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Boys soccer

Stefan Schlotter and Brian Pica each scored two goals and recorded an assist in guiding Sacred Heart Prep past host Robert Louis Stevenson, 7-0, on Saturday in a nonleague game. The Gators beat host Santa Cruz, 2-1, on Friday.

Brian Tinsley added a goal and assist and Jack Crockett also scored for SH Prep (2-), which hosts Mountain View (2-1) at 2 p.m. Saturday.

In another nonleague match, Los Altos beat Menlo-Atherton, 1-0. The Bears (0-2) travel to Palo Alto for a nonleague game at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Girls soccer

Diana Morales scored twice and Olivia Shane and Vanessa Wagner each added a goal as Menlo-Atherton topped visiting San Benito, 4-0, in a nonleague match Saturday.

Breanna Sandoval and Maggtie Malecek shared goalkeeping duties for the Bears, who visit Sacred Heart Prep (0-2) for a nonleague match at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday.

SHP lost, 1-0, to St. Francis on Saturday. Morgan Ketas scored for the Lancers (1-1).

Boys wrestling

Andrew Wang won the 132-pound division of the Peninsula Invitational wrestling tournament and Palo Alto took third as a team Saturday at Half Moon Bay High.

Wang was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler after recording a pair of pins and two victories via technical falls.

Four other Vikings placed fourth or higher, including a pair of third-place finishes from Peter Graham (113) and Calvin Grewal (126). Cooper Kim (120) and Alex Daw (220) placed fourth.

Girls wrestling

Masako Perez reached the championship bout at 150 pounds before losing and placing second. Alexandra Lee (131) placed fourth and Aishah Maas (143) was fifth.
