On Dec. 12, Filoli was provided a synopsis of The Almanac’s story “What’s behind former Filoli employees’ departures?” and the quotes used in it, and given a chance to comment.

This is the full text of their response.

Kara Newport, Chief Executive Officer: “Filoli is saddened that a small group of former employees and volunteers were not able to support the changes we were making last year. Regardless of their statements, it is the position of Filoli that we do not comment on the performance, issues or nature of departure of any former or current employee. We value our employees’ privacy and confidentiality. We currently have a very positive, passionate, creative and supportive team of staff that are working hand-in-hand with me, in partnership with volunteers and with the full support of the Board of Directors and National Trust for Historic Preservation.”

Carolyn Daley, President of the Board of Directors: “The Board is not only supportive, but excited about the changes that have evolved during Kara Newport’s leadership over the past year. These planned changes have resulted in unprecedented growth achieving record attendance of 175,000 this year and the introduction of exciting new programs, including Holidays at Filoli. Kara has stepped into this organization and created growth and inspiration and the Board fully supports her and her team. Filoli is looking to the future as we continue to grow and welcome new and diverse audiences. Filoli is not only a regional but a national treasure and we invite everyone to come and experience magical gardens and the 100 year old preserved historic house.”

  1. What this current board and the so called ED with the alleged bad temper, is doing to Filoli is unforgiveable. I noticed the annual flower show is “reimagined” too. No word on how much Non-Holiday Traditions brought in. All the the attendance is digital. It is very easy to calculate how much money was made.

However since Kara wants to hire paid help (thanks for draining the coffers btw) they are probably running at a loss thus they will be hosting a wedding in june. People can forget coming here in the summer. It will be rented out like a cheap doxie for weddings galore.

May the ghosts of the Bourns and Roths haunt you all.
