House fire causes nearly $300,000 in damage

Menlo Park Fire Protection District crews extinguished a one-alarm fire at a single-story home late Friday that caused nearly $300,000 in damage, fire officials said.

Flames were reported at a residence in Shelby Tract in unincorporated San Mateo County around 11:30 p.m. Friday, fire officials said. The single-story home located at 298 Beresford Ave. had smoke and fire coming from the rear of the structure when fire crews arrived.

According to fire officials, nobody was home at the time of the fire, but a dog ran out as fire crews entered the structure and is still missing as of mid-day Saturday.

"The preliminary cause of the fire appears to be related to a gas/electric fire place," Fire Marshal Jon Johnston said in a statement.

The fire caused $275,000 in structural damage and $25,000 of materials inside the home were considered a loss. Fire officials said it took 25 minutes to extinguish the fire after it burned into attic space.

Fire crews received assistance from the Woodside Fire Protection District and Redwood City Fire Department.

Sorry for this loss, but that is not 298 Beresford. It is 259 Beresford Ave.
