Model railroad association hosts annual train show this weekend

It's a two-tiered fantasy at the West Bay Model Railroad Association, with trains running past every little community, factory and farm. Trains travel through tunnels and traverse a trestle, wind their ways past warehouses with whistling whistles, reload at a refinery and rotate (locomotives) at a roundhouse. The West Bay Model Railroad Association at 1090 Merrill St. in Menlo Park is hosting a free holiday open house of its two-tiered model train layout on Saturday, Dec. 1, from 1 to 5 p.m., and Sunday, Dec. 2, from 1 to 8 p.m.

The Caltrain Holiday Train -- a real train -- is scheduled to make a stop at the Menlo Park station on Sunday at 7:05 p.m. The Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra is set to perform.

The model railroad display is often open to the public on Saturdays, club member Lou Cartalano told The Almanac. "People are always welcome to drop by on Saturday afternoon," he said. "From 1 - 5 p.m. is a good time when you can expect someone to be there."

The display is located in a beige one-story wooden building at the south end of the Caltrain station on Merrill Street in Menlo Park.

Congratulations to all who 'Worked on the Railroad'. My wife and I watched from the 'First Spike' (Wood Supports and Plywood deck) to the Golden Spike. A lot of fun to watch and the final result a visual and engaging delight.

If ya have kids, take them to the monthly open house - it was a highlight for my kids back in the day.
