A building owned by Facebook, located at 200 Jefferson Drive in Menlo Park, has been deemed safe after it was evacuated due to an anonymous bomb threat Tuesday evening (Dec. 11), according to Menlo Park police.

The address is listed as the Instagram headquarters building, according to Google Maps.

According to police spokesperson Nicole Acker, the department received an anonymous tip about a bomb threat from the New York Police Department’s crime stopper program at 4:32 p.m.

Police sent out an alert asking people to avoid the area shortly before 5:30 p.m. The police department and Facebook security team responded and evacuated the building, and traffic in the area was temporarily diverted.

The San Mateo County bomb unit conducted a sweep of the building with explosive detection dogs and did not find any suspicious devices or packages, according to an update from police just before 8 p.m.

According to Menlo Park Police Chief Dave Bertini, the bomb threat included several locations nationwide. He declined to provide further details about the nature of the threat.

“It turned out to be a false report,” he said.

  1. I’m not a big user of Instagram or Facebook, but with respect to the prior post by ‘resident’, I can say that they certainly never did anything to me or my family and friends… except provide a service that we choose to sometimes use. If someone doesn’t like either or both product offerings, don’t use them! Bomb threats are serious and I hope that we as a community will never condone, even indirectly, that kind of behavior. When they are real, they are tragic. When they are not, they divert valuable community resources unnecessarily, and cost our community time, money, and emotional energy… all of which are better spent elsewhere.
