Ravenswood board approves contract for interim superintendent

Gina Sudaria to lead East Palo Alto district until permanent superintendent is hired

Gina Sudaria will stay on as the Ravenswood City School District's interim superintendent through next year or until a new superintendent is hired under a contract the school board approved for her last week.

Sudaria, the district's director of student services and a longtime employee, has been leading the K-8 East Palo Alto district on a temporary basis since February, when former Superintendent Gloria Hernandez-Goff was placed on paid administrative leave. Hernandez-Goff was forced to resign less than a month later.

The board approved Sudaria's contract in a 4-1 vote on May 9, with Trustee Sharifa Wilson abstaining because she was attending the closed-session meeting via telephone from Philadelphia and did not receive the final contract due to a clerical error, according to staff. Wilson and Trustee Ana Maria Pulido had voted against appointing Sudaria as acting superintendent.

Sudaria will serve as interim superintendent through June 30, 2020, unless the board hires a new superintendent before then. She will be paid $14,166 per month, or an annual salary of just under $170,000. She will also receive a one-time retroactive payment of $8,537 for her work in this role from late February through May 9 — the difference between her new pay and the monthly base salary she received as director of student services, according to the contract.

Under the contract, the board will evaluate Sudaria's performance by the end of this year. If the contract expires or is terminated mutually or without cause, she will have seven days to choose to return to her position as student-services director.

The board has not yet launched a search for a permanent superintendent, board President Tamara Sobomehin said.

"In the meantime our focus is still on supporting all needs of the district, and I am confident that Interim Superintendent Gina Sudaria will be an effective leader helping us drive the work to ensure success for all students," she said.
