The Portola Valley School District's school board election for this fall has been canceled because the number of qualified candidates in the race was equal to the number of open seats, according to county officials.

The two qualified candidates for the two open seats – incumbent Brooke Day and Anne Fazioli-Khiari – will be appointed in lieu of an election pursuant to the California Elections Code, said Jim Irizarry, San Mateo County's assistant chief elections officer and assessor-county clerk recorder.

Day joined the school board in 2017. Fazioli-Khiari is a community volunteer and was chairman of the 2018 "Yes on Z" bond measure campaign.

Fazioli-Khiari was one of six candidates who applied for Michael Maffia's seat when he stepped down from the board in March. The board chose district parent Kimberley Morris Rosen to fill the seat.

The deadline to pull papers to run for a seat on district board was extended to Aug. 14 after one of the incumbents, Gulliver La Valle, decided not to seek re-election. No other candidates filed to run for the board after the extended deadline.

La Valle told The Almanac in June he was ready to "let someone else take the torch."
