Rainy-day exit for Guild marquee

Workers on Wednesday, Nov. 27, remove the marquee of the Guild Theatre, a 1920s-era movie house on El Camino Real in Menlo Park. Photo by Sammy Dallal/The Almanac

The Guild Theatre marquee was removed, on this rainy morning, from its longtime perch affixed to the old El Camino Real movie house that will soon be converted into a live music venue.

The plans by the new owner, the nonprofit Peninsula Arts Guild, is to convert the 1920s-era single-screen theater into a three-level venue with a main viewing area on the ground floor, a second-story mezzanine, and a basement with a "green room" and a comfortable area where performers can shower and relax prior to shows.

The new arts space is expected to be about 11,000 square feet, with a maximum height of 34 feet and a capacity of about 150 to 200 seats, or about 500 people at a standing-room-only show.

The seated capacity of the Guild Theatre was 268 - there was also space for a few wheelchairs.
