U.S. Rep. Ro Khanna of Silicon Valley is teaming up with U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders in a legislative effort to block funding they say the Pentagon and President Donald Trump could otherwise use to launch the country into war with Iran.

“Today, we are seeing a dangerous escalation that brings us closer to another disastrous war in the Middle East,” Khanna said in a statement on Friday.

“A war with Iran could cost countless lives and trillions more dollars and lead to even more deaths, more conflict, more displacement in that already highly volatile region of the world.”

President Trump on Thursday authorized a U.S. military airstrike in Iraq that killed top Iranian military leader Qasem Soleimani, an action that left many across the globe discussing the likelihood of retaliation by Iran and its allies.

Khanna and Sanders say they plan to introduce legislation that could “prohibit any funding for offensive military force in or against Iran without prior congressional authorization,” according to the Silicon Valley congressman.

A previous measure to amend the National Defense Authorization Act to block war funding directed at Iran, authored by Khanna and U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida, passed a vote in the House of Representatives in July, but was dropped in December.

“War must be the last recourse in our international relations,” Khanna said.

“After authorizing a disastrous, $738 billion military budget that placed no restrictions on this president from starting an unauthorized war with Iran, Congress now has an opportunity to change course. Our legislation blocks Pentagon funding for any unilateral actions this president takes to wage war against Iran without Congressional authorization.”

Khanna said that instead of waging a new war, the United States has a “crumbling infrastructure,” desperate housing needs, and “the existential crisis of climate change” to face, and that “we as a nation must get our priorities right.”

“The House and Senate should pass our legislation immediately and uphold our constitutional responsibilities,” Khanna said. “We must invest in the needs of the American people, not spend trillions more on endless wars.”

Sanders wrote on Twitter that he and Khanna will introduce the bill “to stop Donald Trump from illegally taking us to war against Iran. It’s working-class kids who will … fight and die in a disastrous new Middle East conflict – not the children of billionaires.”

  1. Cute. Please help us with a couple things:

    1. Your top 3 Democratic quotes of support for Iran?

    2. The last General we assassinated? (the last high level assassination I can think of is Yamamoto.)

Bonus: were you one of the supporters of bringing our troop home?

Nice to know that under Trump, Iran has restarted their nuclear program. With North Korea’s new developments, ImPOTUS is 2 for 2!

Tired of all the winning yet?

  2. For my buddy ImPotus.

    ANN ALTHOUSE ASKS:

Does the Washington Post seem to be encouraging Americans to brainstorm about how Iran can hurt us? Whether that was the idea or not, the top-rated comment over there is: “Trump Hotels. Very soft targets, and if they are heavily protected, no one will stay in them. A threat to the hotel chain would work wonders.”

Somebody else says: “If Iran really wants to harm America as a whole, they might help Russia hack the 2020 elections to help Trump get a second term. That is frightening, but I doubt they’d do it.” Why would Iran want Trump to get a second term? Their brainstorming isn’t just evil, it’s stupid.

    Well, that’s #TheResistance in a nutshell.

  3. omigawd – thanks! Where do you find these decade old crazies?? She used to write these really wierd fantasies about Obama (projection much?) that were pretty off-the-rails. Here’s one:

“Now, swivel your eyes over to Obama’s feet. The foot closest to the woman, like Sarkozy’s, is planted and aimed forward, but the other steps off in the direction of the woman, bending the knee upward into a bit of a crotch-squeeze and forming the base of a dramatic tilt of the entire body into a flexible S-shape that leans toward the woman. Obama’s arms hang free, emphasizing the tilt, and either gravity or will causes the left arm to hang inches away from the torso. See how much lower the right hand is than the left? His neck is craned out and around so that the line of sight is directly at the ass. His mouth is open as if to say: That’s what I want.”

She’s a real peach, that one.

You still looking for the last general we assassinated?

…and those three quotes in your feeble attempt to defend your unpatriotic slander?

  4. – “Don’t mourn Soleimani”

Anyone around here do that? Nice try with the red herring. So sorry that your ad hominem was removed.

    – “Was a big mistake to remove troops from Iraq”

Trump tells us he’s removing troops, he tells us he is adding troops, he tells us that after he removes troops from somewhere he just re-positions them in Saudi Arabia for Jared’s buddy MBS, the killer of Khashoggi.

Worse, Trump has a tweet for every occasion. Trump going to war with Iran to distract from his impeachment?

    Nov. 16, 2011 https://www.businessinsider.com/old-trump-tweets-emerge-claim-obama-wanted-war-iran-2020-1

Trump: “Our president will start a war with Iran because he has absolutely no ability to negotiate. He’s weak and he’s ineffective. So the only way he figures that he’s going to get reelected — and as sure as you’re sitting there — is to start a war with Iran.”

Trump the ImpeachedPOTUS is just another republican chickenhawk – too chicken to go to Vietnam, too chicken to let his kids join the great American military. Happy to send other Americans to battle based on his ego.

  5. Same two guys, back and forth. Gotta admit, it’s always interesting to hear from a trumpie. So rare in our highly literate community.

  6. He may have been a general, but he was also the world’s #1 terrorist. Obama took out a bunch of them with drone strikes that were never authorized or approved by Congress. Just like Trump did with the dead general. Is the world a better place without him? Without a doubt.

The press has been reporting on him as if he were some kind of hero. He was not. At least not to the US.

Virtually no reporting on the Iraqis (and others) who are happy that he is dead. Lots of reporting on the (reportedly) staged “million person” march for the dead general’s funeral. Why is that? Because the networks don’t want want to give Trump any credit for anything he does? Sure looks that way…

  7. – “The press has been reporting on him as if he were some kind of hero”

    What? Where? Please link.

Then ask ultra right wing republicans Rand Paul and Mike Lee about the Trump lies about the assassination.

“A furious Lee said Wednesday that administration officials suggested to members of Congress during the briefing that it would be unpatriotic, un-American and harmful to Americans if they debated or discussed military action in Iran. He called the briefing the worst he has seen and said it was demeaning and insulting.

Lee said he went into the briefing, which included Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Defense Secretary Mark Esper and CIA Director Gina Haspel, undecided about a Senate resolution limiting the president’s power to order further military force in Iran, but came out supporting it.”

  8. If you liked the war in Iraq, you’re going to love ImPOTUS Trump’s war with Iran, whether ‘hot’ or ‘cold’. Anything to get Americans talking about Trump’s corruption in Ukraine and Impeachment.

  9. @Impotus:

You really do suffer from Trump Derangement Syndrome. Even after he takes out the world’s #1 terrorist! Responsible for the killing of hundreds of Americans and thousands of Syrians and Kurds. You probably loved it when Obama gave the Iranians a free pass to nuclear weapons in 10 years, $1.4B in cash and cleared up access to $150B in assets. Like a present-day Neville Chamberlain—-but he was Obama and could do no wrong.

So here’s another Republican’s take on the briefing: ” As an Air Force veteran who served three tours in Iraq, Illinois Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger has had a view of the war there that few Americans have.

As a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee who was part of a classified briefing Wednesday on Capitol Hill, Kinzinger got a look at the circumstances surrounding the U.S. drone strike that killed Iranian Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani that even few members of Congress have seen. “I am convinced even more than ever — and I was fully convinced — this was the right move to save American lives on an imminent basis, and they did the right thing,” Kinzinger said.”

  10. Three fabrications in one sentence – you win!

    – “Obama gave the Iranians a free pass to nuclear weapons in 10 years”
Whereas under Trump they restarted their nuclear program THIS WEEK. Tired of winning yet?

    – ‘gave’ “$1.4B in cash and cleared up access to $150B in assets”
Numbers are off, and it wasn’t ‘given’, that’s a Fox meme. It was Iran’s money, frozen back in the 70’s. But you know that and you just like to lie about it, don’t you?

Just like Impeached Trump’s lies about “imminent threat”. What threat was reduced by assassinating an Iranian state leader?

He was replaced the next day. All threats still exist, but the assassination causes great concerns among allies, middle east nations and others. And the fight against ISIS just stopped in it’s tracks. Soleimani pranced around the region publicly, without a gun. Anyone could have whacked him any time. It took a Trump impulsive, ego driven rage to pull the trigger.

Just another corrupt Trump political act that harms our country. All to try and get re-elected so he can stay out of jail.

Speaking of Derangement Syndrome, all your posts blame Obama. Project much?

  11. ImPotus – You gotta win the award for the sorest looser after an election. Heck, you’ll probably be whining and complaining long into Trump’s 2nd term. BTW, how many different neighborhoods do you live in? But thanks for reading this, I’ll be waiting for your projection in a couple minutes. Why don’t you use your real name this time? Oh right – meow!

And what impeachment? You mean the joke book that Fancy Nancy won’t turn over to the Senate? You mean the one where Nancy couldn’t even get all of her own party to support? We all know that’s a farce. Summary dismissal in the Senate for sure. How about we indite Sleepy Joe for his withholding funds from Ukraine to protect his coattail ridding son. Here’s his gloating, I mean admission of guilt on video:

    https://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2019/09/27/flashback_2018_joe_biden_brags_at_cfr_meeting_about_withholding_aid_to_ukraine_to_force_firing_of_prosecutor.html

West Menlo is spot on. Trump was hired to do a job and he’s getting the job done. Iran’s money? BS. How about the pay retribution for holding all those folks hostage? I bet you’re happy they bought all those missiles from Russia with that money (turns out they got an itchy finger, don’t they?). Thank you Obama Administration. Oh, but I really do want to Thank Obama for our ultra high and skyrocketing health care costs. Obamacare is great – isn’t it? We’ll the pot smoking socialists up in San Fran sure think so.

  12. – “Iran’s money? BS.”

Not very good with a search engine, are you?

    – Obamacare is great – isn’t it?

Agreed, as do a majority of Americans. Let’s keep working to make it better. Remember: Reagan told us Medicare was Socialized Medicine and was against it. It wasn’t. And we kept making it better and better. Now the GOP still wants to take benefits away from Americans.

    – go back to Carter for starting this whole mess

Nice start, but you should go back to the 1953 CIA & Brit overthrow of Iran’s democratic government and the installation of the shah.

Apologies to the more intelligent readers, all the above links are wiki, just trying to keep it simple for you guys.

Back to the ACA, which was the main issue cited when American’s threw the GOP out of congress and reinstalled Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House in the 2018 elections.

    majority approval of the ACA
    https://www.kff.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/9267-02-Figure-1.png?resize=800,450

huge approvals for compnents of the ACA
    https://www.kff.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/9276-Figure-5-Oct-2019.png?resize=800,450

Of course the GOP has no replacement plan for the ACA – ObamaCare/ACA was THEIR plan, after all. The ACA’s a blatant rip-off of Mitt Romney’s MA plan, and Mitt stole it from Heritage.

It just took the Democratic party to implement the rare, good GOP idea. Let’s quit fighting it and make it better.

Yes, their is such a thing as a “good GOP idea.” Kinda falls under the ‘broken clock’ rule.

    – “Why don’t you use your real name this time?”

Says “Leon’s the Man”??? Maybe use your middle initial next time, Mr. Leon’s T Man. Weird comment about neighborhoods, though. Are you referring to the neighborhoods where I own rentals?
