SHP boys basketball wins tournament opener

Defending Central Coast Section Division IV boys basketball champion Sacred Heart Prep opened its season Thursday with a 78-63 victory over Inderkum in the first round of the Riordan Tournament.

Senior Kevin Carney scored 22 points to lead SHP, which plays San Ramon Valley in Friday’s semifinal. Carney made five of SHP’s 11 3-pointers.

Aidan Braccia added 17 points for the Gators, who trailed by 11 points after the first quarter. They tied the game by halftime and then outscored the Tigers 47-32 in the second half.

Sachit Sinha added 11 points for SHP, which played short because of SHP’s appearance in a Northern California Regional football Bowl this weekend.

At the Cupertino tournament, Bellarmine beat Gunn 59-23 and Cupertino beat Sequoia 55-43.

Girls basketball

Valentina Saric recorded a double-double with 25 points, including four 3-pointers, and 12 rebounds as Priory downed Shasta Summit 57-52 in the semifinals of the Kelly Shea Memorial Tournament on Thursday.

Sunishka Kartik also had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds for Priory, which meets host Mills in the tournament championship game Friday at 7 p.m.

Bianca Shi added 17 points, seven rebounds and four steals.

Menlo School, playing its first official game, outscored Central 18-4 in the third quarter to erase a halftime deficit en route to 61-54 victory against the previously unbeaten Grizzlies (5-1) in the first round of the Lady Cat Classic at Moreau Catholic in Hayward.

Freshman Karen Xin hit a 3-pointer early in the third quarter to put Menlo ahead for good at 37-36.

The Knights meet another unbeaten team in host Moreau Catholic (4-0) at 8 p.m. Friday. Moreau beat Sacred Heart Cathedral 52-42.

Central’s Talia Maxwell recorded a double-double with 26 points and 10 rebounds.

In other games, Los Altos scored 13 consecutive first-quarter points on its way to a 59-31 win over Presentation and St. Francis topped St. Joseph’s 59-44.

Gunn won its third straight to open the season, beating Hillsdale 3-1 in a non-league match Thursday.

Mahadev Tapaskar, who recorded a hat trick, scored early in the second half from an assist by Spencer Chan, snapping a scoreless game.

Hillsdale tied the game but Chen delivered a crossing pass to Tapaskar, who was wide open on the back post and who tapped it in for the go-ahead score. He later added another goal, with an assist from Kai Parker.

The Titans play again on Saturday at 1:15pm against Watsonville in the first round of the Homestead Christmas Cup Tournament.

Katie Nelson scored the only goal in Menlo-Atherton’s 1-0 victory over Sacred Heart Prep on Thursday.

M-A (2-0) plays Capuchino Saturday at 4:45 p.m. at Fremont High as part of the Firebird Classic.

In other games, University (San Francisco) beat Menlo 2-0 and Aptos edged Los Altos 1-0.
