The Woodside High boys soccer team gave league leader Burlingame a good battle but fell short, 1-0, on a late goal in a Peninsula Athletic League Bay Division match Wednesday.
Alexis Cardenas and Felix Raeber were standouts in Woodside’s attempt to knock off the Panthers (11-0-4, 4-0-3). Goalie Ethan Hamel recorded six saves in an amazing effort.
Burlingame’s Davis Grundman scored the only goal of the contest.
Woodside (9-5-1, 3-3-1) is in a third-place tie with Carlmont heading into the final three matches of the season.
Woodside and Burlingame entered the match allowing the fewest goals in league play, each with five.
The Wildcats venture to play at second place Aragon at 6 p.m. Friday.
Menlo-Atherton (3-6-4, 2-3-2) played Aragon (8-4-4, 3-1-2) to a 1-1 tie in another match.
Kerian Cornejo scored for the Bears, with an assist from Taylor Zaire.
In the Ocean Division, Sequoia fell to first place Hillsdale 2-0. The Ravens (5-5-5, 2-3-2) are scheduled to play at Westmoor on Friday afternoon.
Santa Clara Valley Athletic League
Mountain View held onto second place in the De Anza Division after playing to a 2-2 tie with Homestead and Los Altos and Gunn remained tied in the standings following a 1-1 draw on Wednesday.
Third place Palo Alto, idle on Wednesday, has a one-point lead over Gunn and Los Altos.
Palo Alto travels to Mountain View for a match Friday night.
Yuki Yanase scored in the second half as Los Altos, finishing the game with 10 players, held on against the Titans, who had several chances to take the lead late.
Gunn (6-6-2, 2-3-2) opened the scoring when Mahadev Tapaskar lofted the ball over the goalie and into the back of the net after taking a cross from Alex Bronstein.
Titans team captain Dane Jefferson was forced out of the contest due to concussion protocols within the first 10 minutes.
West Bay Athletic League
Sacred Heart Prep and Menlo School each recorded a shutout victory Wednesday to remain first and second in the league standings.
Zach Freire, injured during SHP’s state championship run in the football season, scored three times to lift the Gators (9-4-1, 7-1) past Eastside Prep 9-0.
Nathaniel Pi Sunyer and Carlos Deras each added two goals while Logan Aboudara and Luke Maxwell also scored.
Maxwell added three assists and Danny Barragan recorded a pair of assists.
Sacred Heart Prep plays at Menlo on Friday afternoon.
Alessandro Velazquez scored twice to help Menlo (8-3-2, 6-1) down The King’s Academy 4-0. Andre Gonzales Lombera and Daniel Louie also scored while Julian Sheehan, Aidan Skinner and Amari Makasini had assists.
Colin Thomas earned the shutout victory as Menlo won its sixth straight match.
St. Francis beat Serra 2-0 in the West Catholic Athletic League, improving to 6-3-1 in league play, 10-5-1 overall. The Lancers host Bellarmine at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Girls soccer
Allie Montoya scored twice, Karena Shah and Laila Edris each added a goal and Mountain rallied from behind to beat Homestead 4-2 on Wednesday and stay unbeaten on the year.
Isabella Walker assisted on Montoya’s first goal in the first half as Homestead took a 2-1 advantage into halftime.
Walker also recorded a key assist in the second half to knot the score. Kate Stone and Julia Webster also recorded assists for the Spartans (15-0-1, 9-0), who hold an 11-point lead over second place Los Altos (9-4-2, 5-2-1) with three matches to play.
Los Altos beat Gunn 4-1 to move past the Titans (8-5-3, 3-3-2) in the De Anza Division. Ana Schremp scored for Gunn with an assist from Elina Saab-Sundén.
Mountain View plays at Palo Alto (5-8-3, 3-3-2) and Los Altos, which has four matches to play, travels to Los Gatos for matches Friday.
