State Sen. Joe Simitian, D-Palo Alto, is holding a public hearing on California’s controversial high-speed rail project at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 21, at Palo Alto City Hall, 250 Hamilton Ave.

Representatives from the California High-Speed Rail Authority and other elected officials will give presentations at the hearing, which will be followed by a public comment period.

The public is invited to come and express their views.

The hearing will focus on the agency’s new business plan, submitted to the state Legislature in December. The agency was required to provide an updated document before accessing additional state funds.

Sen. Simitian represents residents in communities along the train’s proposed route and chairs the Senate budget subcommittee that oversees transportation spending. He will co-host the hearing with state Sen. Alan Lowenthal, D-Long Beach.

“I see this meeting as an opportunity to clear the air on an issue that evokes strong feelings on all sides,” Sen. Simitian said in a statement.

Residents can watch the hearing live from home via local cable television or on this Web link.

  1. I woul like to have someone from cal train present to answer questions. My suggestion is stop the hsr in San jose. Discuss adding more bullet trains sj to sf instead. Did anyone read the article where q. Kopp said the hsr is a “done deal”

  2. Could someone tell me what do I put for West Menlo? Live on Santa Cruz, almost to Sand Hill

Think the high speed rail should definitely go from SF to LA. Some of you might really like that as you get older. Know I will!!

  3. Like the commentor, Bob, I don’t think people have a clue what HSR even is……….His being from Atherton, which generally is not a bit happy about the entire concept, doesn’t realize that he is talking about “chopping up” a route for a BULLET TRAIN.
He should read the web link and Google “bullet train”…or HSR.
    NOT a commuter.
It is disliked by the majority of the elitists around him who fear loss of property values, and privacy, but are willing to invest in unwanted projects outside of their area where even citizens of Menlo Park,Woodside and Burlingame lost a LOT of money in the bank failures.
I would say those multimillion dollar homes hold heavy mortgages and those who are not Steve Jobs rich, are scared they may have lost a lot more than they could afford. Hence, kill any great project for the PEOPLE like the HSR from SF to LA going past them and upsetting their property values.WRONG.
A flight to LA may cost less, but checking a bag is around $200 and will increase. Say goodbye to flying and hello to the inevitability of HSR, which ANY person with a brain knows is inevitable.
Finally, after the HAITI quake, people ought to be a lot more worried about the fact that most of those objecting communities lie directly on top of the Saint Andreas fault line; and a MAJOR earthquake is long overdue. Bent rails can be repaired faster than fallen homes.

  4. I will try to write this like R. GORDON.

Gordon has never been to our Belle Haven community or he would have played witness to our WORKING CLASS people who still know a BAD DEAL when they see one.

$12B more in ONE YEAR and no promise of a new business plan based upon BUSINESS PRINCIPLES. Our values as residents do not include BANKRUPTING the state for a LUXURY TRAIN when we can’t even get to MARIN by transit. Even with this train and the 10% DEBT SERVICE RATION it will create for the state, we still won’t be able to GET TO DARN MARIN!

HOW IS HAITI A PART OF THIS DISCUSSION?

  5. I want to know what on earth R GORDON takes with him on his trips to LA that costs $200 to check? The Bentley? His Jim Beam bottle collection? Most of us can get by with just a backpack or other carry on!

  6. OKAY…
FOR “truth” Haiti had a bad earthquake. Menlo Park is sitting on the worst West Coast fault…runs right through rich people’s homes. Rebuilding easy for you.
FOR “traveler” also from M.P. where I think I own property.I don’t fly to LA except by private plane. When I do go back East,I do not buy a wardrobe there…most people need to check bags and airlines are ALL going to start charging $200 for second bag.$50 for first.
My Bentley IS in LA in Century Park Plaza garage space.
I hop rides to LA with Republican banking “investment brokers” who LOVE anyone with money.
Since the Haitian earthquake, not ONE investment broker mentioned the Haitian earthquake. They do not like it when I suggest charities to aid the sick and dying”.
Now if you THINK you can write like I do, you will have to mention the poor people, the corruption in California, and not just worrying about a the sound a bullet train makes or how soon your TESLA will arrive. THAT has been discussed and one person is proud to announce he has the THIRD $100,000 off the Palo Alto assembly line. Also, they have been flying to LA about the second TESLA factory plans.TRULY!
Yep, that sure is going to save our auto industry…..
Out of curiosity….have any of you ever heard of Brooke Astor? She was OLD money, but did help both the poor and rich alike.New money just devaluates…The TESLA fella was complaining that they could not put a hands free dash voice activated phone on his dash without sacrificing the navigational system….really pissed him off.
    Jim Beam?……..tells me a lot.
