A 19-year-old Burlingame man was killed in a multiple-vehicle crash on U.S. 101 in San Mateo on Saturday morning (Feb. 6) that forced the roadway’s closure for more than two hours.
California Highway Patrol units responded to reports of multiple crashes on U.S. 101 near Third Street beginning at 2:35 a.m., Officer Nicole Pacheco said.
The driver of an Audi lost control and hit the center divide. Then the Audi bounced off of a sound wall and went back into the lanes, CHP Officer Scott Cakebread said.
Then a 1998 Toyota Camry stuck the driver’s side of the Audi. The driver of the Audi, along with the one other person in the car, were ejected, he said.
The driver, Brett Alan Studebaker, was killed in the crash, according to the San Mateo County coroner’s office. The passenger was taken to Stanford Hospital with major injuries.
The driver of the Camry had minor injuries. The driver of another vehicle, a 2006 Mazda RX-8, that was apparently involved in the incident also was injured, but the extent of those injuries was unknown, according to Cakebread.
Southbound traffic was diverted off the highway before Third Street until the crash was cleared and a Sig-alert was canceled at 4:40 a.m.
The crash remains under investigation.
