Two boys in Nova Scotia got their whole school wearing pink to defend a freshman boy bullied for wearing a pink shirt in 2007 and sparked a movement across North America. Encinal Elementary School in Atherton has decided not to let it die out.

Today (Feb. 16), the school’s 700 kids will be donning rose as part of its first “pink day” to support the prevention of bullying.

Encinal’s second- to fifth-grade students were inspired to organize a “pink day” when guest speaker Spencer West — an expert on bullying — told them the story of the Nova Scotia boys. Now they are hoping to spread the message throughout the school.

Encinal is part of the Menlo Park City School District and is located on 195 Encinal Ave. in Atherton.

  1. Awesome Idea. I went to Encinal in the 50’s and was bullied a lot. 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th grade. Just for being different. It follows you into adulthood. Now I meet the same folks at reunions and we are all “mates”… Good for the Pink Day against bullying. Thank goodness we didn’t have Facebook and Twitter growing up. It is tragic for students to feel less than accepted and liked. You just want to fit in when in your growing up years.

  2. I was at Encinal in the 60’s for the 7th and 8th grade. Man, you want to talk about bullying, I saw it happen too often and am embarrased to say that sometimes I would laugh at it. Good for the kids over there. You know times sure have changed, yet this is a real good change with the kids standing up and challenging what’s wrong.
